"Each of us is responsible to creating for ourselves a
productive and rewarding life." The
Pierre Claeyssens Service & Leadership Award is named in honor
of the late Pierre Claeyssens who passed away in October 2003.
Each year, the award committee honors an exemplary leader, friend
and humanitarian in our community.
The
award is symbolized by a 24-inch tall, fifty-four pound bronze
sculpture by artist Bobbie Carlyle, which portrays a man creating
his own likeness from a block of stone using only the tools of
a sculptor, a malette and a chisel. The perpetual award will bear
the name of the annual recipients and be on rotating display in
the city. The honoree will be presented with a tabletop-size replica
of the sculpture at the award ceremony.
The
award is presented each year by Emmaus of Santa Barbara, a local
youth organization dedicated to empowering our youth to break
the cycle of self-destructive behaviors in their lives. All proceeds
from the dinner benefit Emmaus, a favored organization of the
honorees and the late Pierre Claeyssens who truly believed in
the work of the organization and was one of its strongest and
most committed supporters.
