formerly the Neil A. Armstrong Distinguished Professor of Aeronautical
and Astronautical Engineering at Purdue University, where he also
served as the dean of engineering for ten years. Dr. Yang is a member
of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has received many
awards and honors for his research, teaching, and service, including
two honorary doctorates and the Benjamin Garver Lamme gold medal,
the highest honor from the American Society of Engineering Education.
He has served on committees such as the Defense Science Board and
in various capacities on other scientific advisory boards for the
U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, NASA, the National Science Foundation,
and the National Academy of Engineering.
Dr.
Yang specializes in aerospace structures, structural dynamics,
composite materials, finite elements, transonic aeroelasticity,
wind and earthquake structural engineering, and manufacturing.
He has authored or co-authored more than 160 articles for scientific
journals, as well as a widely used textbook on finite element
structural analysis. He has completed the guidance of 49 Ph.D.
and 18 M.S. theses. Dr. Yang teaches one or two undergraduate
courses at UCSB each year and, with research grants from the National
Science Foundation and NASA, currently supports and guides four
