2007 Award Recipient:
The Richard & Maryan Schall Family

Frank & Katherine MillerIn 1986, Dick and Maryan discovered sunny Santa Barbara. They built a house in the hills, and in the decades since, have shown themselves to be the best of neighbors. They contribute continuously, and invest their time on a great number of local boards and organizations, including Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo, the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, and the Sansum Clinic. In 2003, they were honored as Philanthropists of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 2004, the Schalls acted as facilitators, provided the seed money for, and joined others in contributing to the development of a fully-accredited alternative high school, Summit High, for youth who had completed treatment for alcohol and/or drug addiction and were committed to sobriety. Through those efforts and countless others, the Schalls have proven many times over their passion for helping the youngest and neediest of our neighbors here in Santa Barbara.

Dick and Maryan’s generosity has gifted many worthy organizations in our community around the nation, including Emmaus of Santa Barbara, the UCSB Affiliates, SEE International, the Arts Fund, Direct Relief International, and CALM. Because of their incredible generosity, they are worthy recipients of the Pierre Claeyssens Award for Distinguished Service.

The Schalls have four children – David, Caryn, Janny and Dawn.
