2004 Award Recipient: Dr. Stan Gaede

Stan D. Gaede is a graduate of Westmont College, where he earned the B.A. in 1969. Pursuing his interest in sociology he received the Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1974. That fall, he was appointed to the faculty of Gordon College, where he remained until 1996. While on the faculty at Gordon, he also served for four years as Dean of Students, six years as Chair of the Department of Sociology, and three years as Provost of the college. In 1996, he was appointed Provost at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA and assumed the role of President on July 1, 2001.

Stan Gaede is the author of numerous books and articles, a frequent speaker at colleges, conferences, and churches, and a regular speaker in chapel at Westmont College. Along with Dr. Arthur Holmes and Dr. Harold Heie, he has led the New Faculty Workshop for the Coalition for Christian Colleges and Universities since its inception. His latest book, An Incomplete Guide to the Rest of Your Life (InterVarsity Press), explores the age-old question asked by those at the beginning of their journey: what is the good life, and how can I find it? He is also the author of When Tolerance Is No Virtue: Political Correctness, Multiculturalism, and the Future of Truth and Justice (InterVarsity Press), which seeks to bring Biblical concepts of truth and justice to current concerns regarding political correctness and multiculturalism. His other books include: Surprised By God (Zondervan), Life in the Slow Lane (Zondervan), For All Who Have Been Forsaken (Zondervan), Belonging (Zondervan), and Where Gods May Dwell: on Understanding the Human Condition (Zondervan Press).

Stan Gaede is married to Judy Lynn Brinkman Gaede, whom he met as an undergraduate at Westmont College. They have three children: Kirsten, Nathaniel and Heather. Kirsten is in her second year at Westmont. Nathaniel Gaede, married to Idonia Schermerhorn, is a graduate of Westmont College and currently employed by CMGI in Boston, Massachusetts. Heather is married to Mark Regoli; she is a graduate of Bowdoin College and Duke Law School, is currently employed at Gray Cary Attorneys of Law, in Palo Alto, CA.
