2001 Award Recipient: Dr. David Winter
2001 Award Recipient: Dr. David Winter

Dr. David Winter has been the president and guiding force of Westmont College for the past 25 year. Under his leadership, Westmont has become both a superb Christian liberal arts college and one of the nation's leading undergraduate institutions, based on the findings of such respected organizations as the Carnegie Foundation, U.S. News and World Report and the Templeton Foundation. While president of Westmont, he was named among the 100 most effective college leaders in the U.S. based on a study funded by the Exxon Foundation. He was also a recipient of one of five President Leadership Awards and grants given nationally by the Knight Foundation.

Dr. Winter is held in the highest regard by his faculty, students and friends as a genuine leader who inspires others by his selflessness and dedication to service. He is a faith-filled man who challenges his students and faculty by asking "What kind of world do you want?" and "How will you contribute to creating it". During his tenure, Westmont students have created more than 30 ministries both on and off campus. One of the largest of these ministries is "Potter's Clay", which sends several hundred students to Ensenada, Mexico each year to assist the poor. Other include: Casa Rosa, working with chemically dependent new mothers, Habitat for Humanity, building homes for the poor, AIDS C.A.R.E., a weekly visitation program for AIDS sufferers, and Adopt-a-Grandparent.

In addition to his extraordinary contributions to Westmont College as President, Dr. Winter has also been an active leader in the Santa Barbara community. He has chaired the board of the Salvation Army Hospitality House, the Santa Barbara United Way and the Santa Barbara Industry Education Council. He has served as a director of the Montecito Rotary Club, the Channel City Club, the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce and St. Vincent's School. In 1998, the Santa Barbara Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse name him one of their "Twelve Men of Distinction" and the Santa Barbara News-Press honored him with a lifetime achievement award. In 1999, the John Templeton Foundation selected him as one of 50 college presidents who exercised leadership in character development. In 2000, Dr. Winter received the "Distinguished Community Service Award" from the Anti-Defamation League and the Santa Barbara B'Nai B'rith Lodge.

Dr. David Winter retired as President of Westmont College at the end of the 2001 school year. He subsequently assumes the honorary position of Chancellor of Westmont College and will be functioning as an "ambassador at large". He is looking forward to spending quiet time with his wife, Helene and to doing some traveling. His faculty, student, friends and fellow citizens of Santa Barbara are confident that he "does not go quietly into that good night".
