ESB RETREAT: ROPES COURSE

Emmaus retreats are an integral part of the overall process. Both Break the Cycle and Peer Leadership use the retreat to break through the initial tension and inhibitions that many of the participants exhibit. We feel that only after breaking down these walls will the participant truly be able to change.

What Are the Retreats About?

Emmaus retreats are facilitated by a student staff (Peer Leaders) along with Team Emmaus to give students a chance to get away from the usual routine of their lives and to then spend quality time in quiet reflection, deep sharing and self-disclosure in an environment of hospitality and safety. This time apart with others on the same path to personal transformation allows them to meet new people and make life-long friends.

The schedules and contents vary based on the particular retreat, but generally include:

  • witness talks
  • presentations
  • large and small group discussions
  • reflection times
  • journal times
  • social times

What Are Some Areas of Focus of the Emmaus Retreats?

The Emmaus retreats hope to enkindle in the participants a fresh and vibrant zest for life and a desire to develop healthy relationships.

The retreats offer opportunities for greater self-awareness, self-knowledge, self-acceptance as well as an introduction to the development of healthier inter-personal relationships. The discussions throughout the program will help participants to look more closely at their own character defects and to make the necessary changes that will then bring joy and happiness to their lives. One of the most unique features of the retreats is that they are designed to develop and deepen personal growth through intentional scheduled occasions to examine one's life with the help of a trained Emmaus Mentor.

What Happens After Emmaus Retreats?

Emmaus of Santa Barbara Retreats are a lasting experience that often times become the defining moment in many participants' lives. Participants and Staff Counselors alike develop true friendships that continue throughout much of their lives offering a deep sense of connection and stability. Follow-up events such as workshops and conferences carry the spirit and vision of the retreat to the entire local community and family and schools. Opportunities are provided for adult mentoring, skill development, counseling and guidance. Students may also want to become Peer Leaders and Staff Counselors for the following program year.
