2003 Award Recipient: Tom Thomas
William
S. "Tom" Thomas, Jr., is President & Chief Executive
Officer of Pacific Capital Bancorp, a $4.2 billion, 41 branch multi-community
bank holding company serving the Central Coast that includes Santa
Barbara Bank & Trust, First National Bank of Central California,
South Valley National Bank and San Benito Bank.
A 1965 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with
an MBA from the University of Southern California, Mr. Thomas launched
his career in 1969 with Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. He
held senior management positions with Security Pacific National
Bank for 16 years and then with Bank of America following the merger
of those two banks. He joined Santa Barbara Bank & Trust in
1994, was named President & Chief Operating Officer two years
later, and President & Chief Executive Officer of the bank and
the holding company in April 2000. Mr.
Thomas is a Trustee of the UCSB Foundation, serves on the boards
of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Partners in
Education, and El Adobe Corporation (Santa Barbara Foundation).
He chairs the Fighting Back Task Force of the Council on Alcoholism
and Drug Abuse (CADA), and is an Advisory Board Member for the
Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. Mr. Thomas chaired the
2000-2001 United Way of Santa Barbara County Community Campaign.
